Picking seeds for the Indian growing calendar
Most Indian gardeners sow twice a year — kharif (June-October monsoon) for tomato, brinjal, okra, cucumber, and marigold; rabi (October-March winter) for spinach, methi, coriander, peas, and pansies. Hill-station varieties like lettuce and broccoli prefer rabi everywhere.
Check the packet for the recommended sowing window and depth. Tiny seeds like coriander and methi go barely under the surface; large seeds like pumpkin and bean go 2-3 cm deep.
Germination tips
Soak large hard-coated seeds (bean, pumpkin, coriander) overnight before sowing. Use seed-starting mix or cocopeat — garden soil compacts and chokes seedlings. Keep the medium moist but not soggy. Most vegetable seeds germinate in 5-10 days at 22-30 °C.
Frequently asked questions
How long are the seeds viable?+
Stored in their sealed packets in a cool dry place, most vegetable and flower seeds stay viable for 1-2 years. Onion, leek, and parsnip drop off faster — use within a year.
Do you ship hybrid or heirloom seeds?+
Both. Each packet specifies whether it's heirloom (open-pollinated, true-to-type) or F1 hybrid (higher yield, won't seed-save reliably).
What if my seeds don't germinate?+
Send us a photo of the sowing setup over WhatsApp and we'll diagnose. If it's the seed, we'll reship at no charge.
